A Peek at Our "Parlor" (AKA the Living Room)

I’ve made a few updates to our front room that I’ve lovingly dubbed “The Parlor” in the past few months and I thought I’d share its current state with y’all! This is the first space you see when you walk into our house, which has a completely open floor plan. It leads into the dining area, then into the family room, and the kitchen is adjacent to that at the far end.

This is the space we use when we host guests that’s free of toys and has a little more of a tailored, sophisticated feel. The family room at the opposite end is where we hang out most of the time when it’s just us, and just about anything goes - sometimes it’s Grand Central Station with Brio trains, MagnaTile tower land, or it hosts a big fort!

Since there are sight lines from the front to the back of the house, designing our main floor has been a bit of an art form - though it has well-defined “zones” they all need to feel cohesive. It’s been a fun challenge! I’m sure things will continue to evolve a bit over time, but I’m pretty happy with it in its current state.

The most significant update is definitely the blue patterned chairs*. The chairs we had here previously weren’t very comfortable, especially for taller folks, so I was eager to replace them. When I spotted these last summer, I knew they were it. The pattern is so fun, and I love the way they catch your eye when you walk in the front door.

I also changed up the pillows in here on the sofa, which is one of my favorite ways to refresh a room without spending a lot! My newest pillow purchase is this one from a great Etsy shop (my go-to for custom pillows). Sadly, the others you see here are discontinued, but I’ll link to some similar ones at the bottom of the post.

Much of the rest of the space has stayed the same furniture-wise - the ivory slipcovered sofa is my favorite place to read in the house. It’s such a comfortable, loungy spot with its bench cushion and down-filled cushions! I’d definitely recommend this sofa if you’re in the market for something similar.

Side note: frustratingly, its price has gone up significantly since we bought ours before COVID, but I’d still give it a thumbs up. This sofa and this one are similar, a little more budget-friendly!

This vintage coffee table is still a favorite find from a local antique store (RVA Antiques if you’re local). I found it along with the dresser we have in our primary bedroom on the same day - I couldn’t believe my luck! Did you spot the fluted detail on the sides? That style is definitely trending right now - everything old is new again!

So there you have it! A little updated tour of our Parlor. I’ll be showing off this space again in a couple of weeks with a super fun new addition - any guesses on what it could be? I can’t wait to show you!
