Modern Cottage Nursery Inspiration

Now that I’ve shared our news that we’ve got a baby girl coming in December, I can start talking about our plans for the nursery! I’ve had so many people share their excitement about seeing my design plans for a girl’s nursery, which is so sweet! I’m still tweaking the design, so today will be all about the inspiration for the room. I hope this will satisfy at least a teensy bit of curiosity until I’m ready to share the actual plans!
Our home has three bedrooms - the primary, our son’s, and a guest room. Even though we don’t use the guest room that often, I was hesitant to give it up completely since we love hosting people when they come to town. With that in mind, we’re going to create a shared space that can house the nursery and flex to a guest room when needed.
I’ve thought a lot about how I want this room to look and feel - making the most of the furniture we already have and adding in some new pieces to make it a functional and pretty nursery for baby girl. I’m going for a “modern cottage” style with a mix of warm and cool tones that incorporates antiques alongside some clean-lined pieces. The vibe will likely feel akin to a mashup of Amber Interiors, Studio McGee, and Jean Stoffer Design if you’re familiar with those talented designers.
Let’s take a peek at some inspiration images that have caught my eye and offered some direction for this new nursery/guest room space!
Inspiration for a baby girl’s modern cottage nursery

Since this will be a multipurpose room serving both a little one and adults, the style needs to straddle both of those as well. I definitely want it to have some playful, nursery-oriented elements, but it should feel comfortable for a grownup too. I think this will serve us well in the long run too since a lot of the pieces I’m looking at can grow with her as she gets older.
I’ll be pulling color inspiration from this vintage-style rug we have in there already, which might be a little more saturated than you might envision for a baby girl, but I’m excited to push the limit a bit! It primarily has a mix of blues, faded reds (more like a raspberry tone), and ivories, but when you look closely, there are greens, teals, and even mustard. There’s a lot to pull from, and I’m looking forward to using those colors for other elements of the room. I like that it doesn’t scream baby, but I can definitely use it as a base to add some softer, feminine touches.

Another common element you might notice in these photos is wallpaper. I’m dying to add some to this room and I think I’ll keep it to an accent wall behind the crib. Pulling colors from the rug will be key to helping it feel cohesive and I’ve got some samples on the way to try out. I’m drawn to a few different feminine florals and I’ll be curious to see what they look like in person next to the rug.

I’m also not afraid to use blue in a girl’s bedroom and I love the idea of it next to a muddy darker pink or rusty red. A lot of these rooms have that combination and it has a wonderful warm/cool feel to it.
Lest you forget this is a guest room as well, I’ll end with a bedroom inspiration photo! The warm, cottage-y vibe of this room is so good. You’ll notice that it still has some great structure though with the clean-lined dresser and tailored slipcovered bed.

I hope this offers a peek into the look and feel I’m going for in this shared nursery and guest room space! I’m hopeful that I’ll have finalized the design (at least to the point where I feel good about it!) to share in the coming weeks, and then it’ll be off to the races on rearranging the room, ordering those new pieces, and getting the room all set up for baby girl’s arrival in December!
