My Recent E-Design Projects (What I've Been Working On!)
It’s been just over three years since I started my e-design company and in that time, I’ve worked on over 100 rooms with some pretty fantastic clients. It makes my mind spin a little bit to think about all those designs and I’m blown away by how much this little biz has grown - especially in 2018! I’m incredibly grateful to the folks who have put their trust in me to help them turn their homes into places they love, that reflect their personal style, and are functional for how they live.
Since I work with clients all over the country, I don’t always have the opportunity to see and photograph the finished spaces to share with you, but I thought it would be fun to go through some of my recent projects and show you the design boards. Design boards are realistic-looking room renderings that I put together for all of my full room e-design clients. They’re incredibly helpful for visualizing what the design will look like! I create these in Photoshop (in case you’re curious) and arrange the actual products I’m recommending in the design boards in a room setup to give clients a sense of what it will all look like together. Once they’re happy with how everything looks, I put together a shopping list with those exact pieces of furniture to make their purchasing process simple and straightforward so they can start putting their room together right away.
E-design is a fun, convenient, and easy way to work with an interior designer/decorator as long as you’re willing to put some effort into it on your end. At the beginning, you’ll be doing things like measuring your space and sending photos, and on the back end you make the purchases, manage the logistics, and set everything up. Because you’re handling those aspects of the process, e-design is also typically more affordable than an in-person, full-service designer.
Now that I’ve talked your ear off about e-design, let’s take a look at the pretty part - the designs!
Modern Farmhouse Living Room
This was the first space of several I designed for a young couple just outside of Philadelphia. They moved from a small apartment into a larger house and were pretty much starting from scratch! This living room was empty, but was a perfect blank slate. It’s right off of the entry, so it’s one of the first rooms you see when you come into the house. A fireplace on one wall provided a great focal point to center a seating area around, which made it perfect for conversation and entertaining.
I loved the style we landed on here - I titled it “modern farmhouse,” but it really is a mashup of that along with some coastal, mid-century, and eclectic touches. Their style aligns really nicely with my personal style, which made putting it all together fun and easy!
(As a side note, if you’re looking for an e-designer to work with, be sure to look at their portfolio to make sure their style is a match with yours! Although a lot of designers can work with different styles, having similar tastes makes the process run more smoothly and is more enjoyable for everybody.)
Space-Themed Powder Room
If you follow along with Mix & Match on Instagram, you saw this powder room in a recent post! Half-baths (or any bathroom, for that matter) are a great place to take design risks, and I was really excited to work on this client’s request for a “space-themed” bathroom. I was all in on this out-of-the-box concept! We wanted to have some fun with wallpaper here and create a hight impact, monochromatic look in this spot. Well, I think we did it!
That moon phase black and white wallpaper was the perfect way to work in the space theme without going too over-the-top. I absolutely love that freestanding modern wood vanity, and the brass hardware and lighting bring some warmth into this otherwise black and white space.
New Traditional Dining Room
This dining room is still a work in progress, but I wanted to share this particular design board because I just loved it so much. Sadly, the client figured out that wallpaper wasn’t going to work in here because of the unevenness of the walls in her older home, but isn’t that blue and white paper gorgeous?
The client’s style blends old and new, and has some nods to a modern coastal feel as well. The beautiful china hutch you see in the background is a family piece (it was staying of course!), so it was important to help it fit in well without going too traditional overall. I integrated it into the design by choosing some updated classics along with some modern touches, and think it works really nicely all together!
Rustic Modern Living Room
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing this living room in person and it’s really lovely! The final design evolved a little bit from what you see here, but I’m hoping I’ll get to share some before and after photos with you soon after the first floor gets painted. I worked on several rooms in this house (including a full kitchen remodel) and it’s been a joy to see it come together.
This client is a fan of Restoration Hardware’s style, but with a slightly more modern edge. For the most part, we kept the colors neutral and played with texture, tone, and shape to add visual interest. She really likes to keep things simple and unfussy, which was definitely something I could get on board with! The whole first floor is open concept, which means the living room opens up to the dining room and then the kitchen, so it was important to make sure everything flowed together. Clean Coastal Master Bedroom
This is a design I shared with my client just last week so it’s still in very much in the early phase, but I couldn’t wait to share it! My clients are a family that just purchased a beach house in North Carolina and will be giving the dated home a total makeover in the next year or so. There’s some really outdated “beachy” furniture in there right now, but that’ll start moving out over time as we get the plans together for each room. It’s going to look SO good when it’s done.
We want the style to give a nod to it's location and the easy-breezy vibes of a beach house, but it’ll have more of a clean-lined and sophisticated coastal look overall. More to come on this home later this month, so stay tuned!
Industrial Farmhouse Home Office
The final e-design project I’ll share today is another work in progress. This home office is part of a larger project that I’ll be working on over the coming months with these clients. This couple recently purchased a new home in Maryland and we’re working to add their own style and personal touch to it while honoring its existing features. She works from home primarily, so we’re creating a cozy office for her in one of the front rooms of the house. They want it to almost have a “library” feel with some industrial and masculine touches. The desk will float in the center and there will be a nice reading corner with a worn leather chair to complement the workspace. It already has a fireplace in the corner that we’ll (hopefully!) be updating to give it a more modern look and help it blend in better with the room. I’m loving the darker gray walls - it feel so inviting!
